Nepal celebrates 34th World Tourism Day with the aim to promote water tourism in Nepal. This year’s theme celebration “Tourism and Water: Protecting Our Common Future” is focused on raising awareness on usability of water resources. Given the water and electricity scarcity in Nepal, the theme is pertinent with the need of the hour on improving energy efficiency and using renewable energy technologies.

KATHMANDU, Nepal–Experts and stakeholders have long been complaining that climate change have adverse impact on the lives of mountain people. However, people of the mountain community are unaware about the issues due to the lack of knowledge, and education and particularly the interest. Neither they are aware nor convinced about the climate change that is posing threats to their lives and livelihood. In an attempt to study the impact of climate change on such lives, three aspirant women climbers who reached to top of Mt K2, the deadliest peak in the world have also reached to the conclusion that Himalayan lives has been doomed by the climate change. They had observed the impacts of climate change in the high Himalayan region during their K2 expedition.

k2summiterNepali women veterans Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, Maya Sherpa and Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, who also set the record of being the first Nepali women to successfully climb K2 on July 26 witnessed that Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than ever before.

They also noticed significant changes in weather patterns of high Himalayan reign. During a programme held in the capital Kathmandu, they complained that many people turned their deaf ear towards the reality of climate change.

“In my decade long mountaineering career, I have witnessed noticeable changes in the weather patterns of Himalaya. What I learnt during the period is mountain people are ignorant about climate change”, Today’s Nagrik national daily quoted Pasang Lhamu, a 30-year-old mountaineer from Solukhumbu district as saying. She also stressed the need to make aware about the changing climate patterns to mountain people.

In fact, the women mountaineer had left for the peak with a drive– to raise awareness about the change and their mission was supported by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

They have a better experience at the camp-2 of Mount K2 where a rock once covered with snow seemed like just an ordinary rock. Maya Sherpa, a 35-year-old mountaineer from Okhaldhunga district, said they observed the impacts of climate change in the high Himalayan region during their K2 expedition. Dawa Sherpa, another member of the team said their conquer over the peak was as similar to winning the Great War.

The women are planning to release a book and video about their observations that they made during arguably the world´s most difficult ascent.

KATHMANDU: As many as 150 species of birds are in endangered list in Nepal of late.

The birds have been at risk with the cleanup of their habitats, stated a report recently made public by the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation and Bird Protection Association. Bird protection expert Khadananda Poudel said that the main reason behind gradual disappearance of bird species are population growth followed by rising deforestation and timber smuggling. He further said the rampant use of modern technology has also posed threat to the existence of birds. “A type of radiation emerges from the use of modern technology that causes shortening the lifespan of birds”, he claimed.

Poudel went on saying that the Association has been working to update and protect the bird species under threat.

The study revealed that various bird species including eagle, Rato Lahanche, small-sized peacock, crane, white vulture, Dangar vulture, small brown vulture and golden vulture are in endangered list.

Nepal–Every six foreign tourists create one job in Nepal, a new survey carried out by the Tourism Ministry on Thursday revealed, thanks to the whooping number of tourist’s arrival in the Himalayan nation. Tourism Employment Survey 2014, the first ever survey of the tourism industry carried out in the country showed that 797,616 tourist arrivals in Nepal led to jobs for 138,148 persons.

Solukhambu Namche

“The proportion of tourist visits and job opportunity created suggests that one job was generated from every six foreign tourist visits over a year’s period,” the survey reads. The trekking sector was the largest employer in the tourism industry followed by tourist standard hotels, travel agencies, star hotels and international airlines. The survey has it that 1,636 trekking agencies provided 50,004 jobs, 625 tourist standard hotels provided jobs to 26,808 people, 2,112 travel agencies offered job opportunity to 25,238 people and 105 star-rated hotels employed 13,459 persons. The survey conducted between May and June, was based on 192 tourism establishments in 10 districts. However, it is lower than the estimate of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which states that the entry of one tourist into a particular country provides employment to 12 people. The figure revealed by the survey is also lower than the employment figure estimated by the Economic Survey 2013 which states that the tourism industry has generated 178,000 direct jobs.

Stakeholder said the survey is just linked with total arrivals and their outcome in the industry, thus it still could not gave a real figure of jobs created by the industry. The survey said that more than half (58 percent) of all the employees in the tourism industry were indigenous 33 percent were Brahmin/Kshetri, 5 percent were Dalit and 3 percent were Tarai/Madhesi. Around 19 percent of the employees were highly skilled.

According to the survey, women’s engagement in the tourism industry was nominal. Around 20 percent of the employees were female while 78 percent had secondary or a higher level of education. Almost 47 percent had completed intermediate level of education. The survey also found 24 percent employees as seasonal worker while 76 percent regular ones and most of the employees in the industry were young.

Regarding salary, 37 percent of the workers earned Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per month while another 37 percent made Rs 20,000 per month.

Similarly, 226 home-stay establishments employed 2,738 people, 49 rafting companies employed 735 people and 60 paragliding and ultra-light companies employed 440 persons.

Data was collected from 192 tourism establishments located in various districts.
