Indian kid successfully climbs Kalapatthar

A five year and 11 month old Indian boy claimed to have set a new world record by successfully climbing Kalapatthar peak, some 200 metre above the base camp of Mount Everest in Nepal.

Harshit Saumitra, the son a famous mountaineer from India, reached 5,554 m high Kalapatthar on October 17.Harshit’s climbing team included his father Rajeev Saumitra and two Sherpa guides.

Harshit had embarked towards the Everest base camp on October 7, when he landed at Lukla Airport by a helicopter. It took the boy 10 days to reach the base camp, for which ordinary people take 7 days.

“I had taken special precaution for his safety and his health condition is perfectly sound,” said his father.Harshit was moving towards the base camp located in North-East Nepal at a time when dozens of people, mostly foreigners, lost their lives in the Himalayas, due to snow blizzard in North-West Nepal.

“We took two days’ rest at a tent on way to the base camp to protect from the blizzard,” Rajeev said.He has not shown any symptoms of headache or high altitude sickness during the climbing, despite his young age, he added.

“Jay Hind, India is the great,” Harshit said waving the Indian tri-colour after reaching Kalapatthar. The peak is higher than the highest peaks of three continents, Europe’s Mount Blanc (4,810 m), Antartica’s Vinson Massif (4,892 m) and Australia’s Punack Jaya or Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m).

Harshit has set a world record by breaking earlier records, claimed his father Rajeev at a press conference in Kathmandu. The boy had broken the record set by seven-year-old Aryan Balaji, another Indian boy, who had reached the Everest base camp and Kalapatthar in May 2012.

Harshit’s father said that he will start the process of registering the name of Harshit for Limca Book of Records from tomorrow.”We will provide all the evidences including his birth certificate and the video clippings of the climbing,” he said.

“We are also considering to apply for Guinness World Records for our claim of setting a world record shortly,” he added.

KATHMANDU, Nepal–Experts and stakeholders have long been complaining that climate change have adverse impact on the lives of mountain people. However, people of the mountain community are unaware about the issues due to the lack of knowledge, and education and particularly the interest. Neither they are aware nor convinced about the climate change that is posing threats to their lives and livelihood. In an attempt to study the impact of climate change on such lives, three aspirant women climbers who reached to top of Mt K2, the deadliest peak in the world have also reached to the conclusion that Himalayan lives has been doomed by the climate change. They had observed the impacts of climate change in the high Himalayan region during their K2 expedition.

k2summiterNepali women veterans Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, Maya Sherpa and Dawa Yangzum Sherpa, who also set the record of being the first Nepali women to successfully climb K2 on July 26 witnessed that Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than ever before.

They also noticed significant changes in weather patterns of high Himalayan reign. During a programme held in the capital Kathmandu, they complained that many people turned their deaf ear towards the reality of climate change.

“In my decade long mountaineering career, I have witnessed noticeable changes in the weather patterns of Himalaya. What I learnt during the period is mountain people are ignorant about climate change”, Today’s Nagrik national daily quoted Pasang Lhamu, a 30-year-old mountaineer from Solukhumbu district as saying. She also stressed the need to make aware about the changing climate patterns to mountain people.

In fact, the women mountaineer had left for the peak with a drive– to raise awareness about the change and their mission was supported by the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

They have a better experience at the camp-2 of Mount K2 where a rock once covered with snow seemed like just an ordinary rock. Maya Sherpa, a 35-year-old mountaineer from Okhaldhunga district, said they observed the impacts of climate change in the high Himalayan region during their K2 expedition. Dawa Sherpa, another member of the team said their conquer over the peak was as similar to winning the Great War.

The women are planning to release a book and video about their observations that they made during arguably the world´s most difficult ascent.

Ultra marathon runner and mountaineer, Sanjay Pandit, sets a new world record by spending over 6 minutes – half naked on top of Mount Elbrus.

On his way to conquering the tallest mountain in Russia, Mount Elbrus, Pandit spent 6minutes and 3seconds with top half of his body naked out in an extreme condition toSanjay-Pandit-holding-a-Nepal-flag set the world record. Adverse weather had delayed his accent up the Elbrus, by two days. On the same day, July 20, he successfully climbed another popular mountain in Russia mount Chirgad. Sanjay Pandit who had been making plans to climb all the tallest mountains in all seven continents has already succeeded in Asia, Africa and Europe. Sanjay Pandit holding a Nepal flag, Photo: RSS

Within Nepal Pandit has climed dozen mountains including Manaslu, Chhukugree, Island peak and Nagarjun. In doing so, he has also put his name on record books as the first ultra marathon runner to climb all these mountains. Pandit is said to be currently in the process of registering his triumph in the record books. Pandit has thanked all those who supported his endeavour including Nepal government, Ministry of Sport, Nepal Sports Council and Nepal Mountaineer Association among others. He is planning on climbing mount Denali in United States for his next challenge. Spending even a short time at the top of Mount Elbrus is a daunting task with temperatures dipping down to -60 degrees centigrade. Pandit is said to have suffered some frost bite on his feet and had acquired spots around his face (probably due to frostbite).

However, he has said that he was proud to have done so. “I feel proud to let the world know of Nepal and Nepali’s bravery though the medium of sport”, Pandit said.
