One December 3, TripAdvisor disclosed the winners of its 2013 Travellers’ Choice Awards for Destinations on Rise. The list disclosed by the website is based on reviews and votes of travellers. The ‘destinations on rise’ category rates places that have seen the biggest increase in positive reviews from travellers on the site over the past years.

Kathmandu has been ranked third in Trip Advisor’s Traveler’s Choice for destinations on rise in the world and has emerged as the top rising destination in Asia.

Kathmandu has been listed third on the list of “rising travel destinations in the world” by Tripadvisor, one of the most reputed search engines for travellers. The capital city has also made its way on the top of the list for famous travel destinations in Asia.

Kathmandu, Nepal ranks just behind Havana in Cuba and La Fortuna de San Carlos in Costa Rica to make its place in third in the world rankings.

Along with the ranking, Traveladvisor has listed 65 must visit places in the Kathmandu valley that includes Bodnath stupa, Swayambhunath Temple, Changunarayan, Garden of Dreams and a lot of major tourist hubs rich with cultural and social heritages.

The Tripadvisor list of the major travel destinations in the world includes:

  • 1. Havana, Cuba
  • 2. La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica
  • 3. Kathmandu, Nepal
  • 4. Jerusalem, Israel
  • 5. Cusco, Peru
  • 6. Ambergris Caye, Belize
  • 7. Sapporo, Japan

Kathmandu valley is blessed with seven of the world heritage sites in the world that includes the Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan.

Kathmandu is also the only destination to make its way on to the list from the South Asia in the top 10 list. Around 800,000 travels came to Nepal by air in 2012 and it also has been reported that the number of tourists arrivals is gradually rising from month to month in 2013.

Travel & Tourism shown to be Asia’s largest employer

The Travel & Tourism industry employs more people than any other sector in Asia.

New research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) shows that Travel & Tourism directly employs 65 million people across Asia which is more than those employed in financial services, communication services, banking, mining, higher education, chemicals manufacturing and automotive manufacturing.

David Scowsill, the President and CEO, WTTC, says the figures underline the need for Governments to prioritise the industry; “The research clearly indicates the vast economic and social relevance of the Travel & Tourism industry in Asia as well as its potential over the next decade. Travel & Tourism is responsible for 1 in 12 jobs in Asia and employs more people than any other sector”.

Mr Scowsill is urging Governments to adopt the following measures; “The way forward for growth and prosperity is to implement smarter visa and border security policies, avoid or abolish tourist taxes and attract and develop a skilled workforce to support the growing demand. The sector has an exciting future – Governments need to make sure they make the most of the opportunity”.

The new study shows the number of people directly employed in the following major industries:

1. Travel & Tourism – 65.2m jobs
2. Financial Services – 65m jobs
3. Education – 64.7m jobs
4. Communication services – 34m jobs
5. Banking – 32.5m jobs
6. Mining – 16m jobs
7. Chemicals Manufacturing – 13m jobs
8. Automotive Manufacturing – 12.6m jobs
9. Higher education – 8m jobs
