The government of Nepal has decided to waive off climbing permit fee for mountain peaks in mid and far western regions for five more years effective from July 16. “It decided to extend royalty waiver after witnessing significant rise in trekking and mountaineering activities in mid and far western region over the past five years”, states the notification letter sent by Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation to Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Earlier, the government had waived off climbing permit fee for mountain peaks in mid and far western region for five years starting July, 2008.

MakaluTrekking Agencies had been lobbying with MoCTCA for extension of royalty waiver arguing that trekking and mountaineering activities in mid and far western region was increasing gradually. Some unclimbed peaks of the region are:

The Government of Nepal has recently opened a total of 104 untouched mountain peaks, including a new eight – thousand ‘Mount Yalunga Kang [8,077m/26,499ft], for commercial mountaineering purposes. This consideration at the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation [UAAA], has been carried out also to give five new eight – thousand peaks in the country a recognition in the mountaineering platform of the world.

Among the total 104, 5 new peaks above 8,000 meters, the Yalunga Kang, Kanchenjunga South [8,476m/27,808ft], Kanchenjunga Central [8,473m/2,7798ft], Lhotse Middle [8,413m/27,601ft] and Lhotse Shar [8,400m/27,559ft] have been proposed. Along with them, 103 other peaks have been released for commercial mountaineering activities. This surplus additional has further expanded the grand total number of peaks in the country to 414, for commercial purposes as well.

According to the data, Nepal encompasses 3,310 peaks including 1,913 climbing peaks.

Mt. Kailash (6714m) is the most sacred mountain in Asia. It is believed to be the physical embodiment of the mythical Mt Meru, said to be the center of the universe or ‘navel of the world’. Mt. Meru is depicted as a mandala, and its image occurs throughout both Buddhista and Hindu parts of Asia. Mt Kailas is holy to followers of four religions. To Hindus, Kailash is the abode of Shiva and nearby Manasarobar Lake is the means or soul of Brahma. Tibetans call Kailas Kang Rimpoche. Jains worship it as Mt Ashtapada, the peak from which the religion’s founder, Rishabanatha, achieved spiritual liberation. Followers of Bon-Po, the ancient pre- Buddhist shamanistic religion of Tibet, revere Kailas as the soul of Tibet. Mt. Kailash has long been an object of worship for four Major religious, for Hindu, it is domain of Shiva, It is also the abode of samvara-a multiarmed, wrathful deity worshipped in the chakrasamvara Tantric cycle of Tibetrian Buddhism. The joins of India also reverse the mountain as the site at which the first of their saints emancipated. And in the ancient Bon religion of Tibet, Kailash was the secred nine storeys Swastika Mountain, upon which the Banpo founder Shenrab alighted from haven. The 53 Km. Kailash circuit is the holist of all-Hindu as well as Buddist pilgrimages and the beacon, which draws most traveller to western Tibet. It is said that a single Parikarma erases the accumulated sins of a lifetime, while 108 cicurmbulation will achieve Salvation.

More foreign tourists lured toward “district beyond Himalaya”

KATHMANDU, Nepal–The number of foreign tourists visiting Upper Mustang area in Mustang district has increased. As per the data of the office of Immigration, as many as 3,729 foreign tourists visited Upper Mustang in fiscal year 2013/14. The number was 3,266 in previous year.

Officials believe that with the enlist of ‘Top 10 Best Regions to Travel in 2013’ by Lonely Planet — the largest selling travel guidebook — the flow of foreign tourists visiting Mustang, also known as the district beyond Himalaya, increased continuously. Snow caped peak, natural attraction, breathless views, and unique culture of local people are the major attractions of Upper Mustang.

According to the Department of Immigration (DoI) in Kathmandu, most of the tourists visiting Upper Mustang are from France (730), Germany (394) and USA (387).

Foreign trekkers opting to travel Upper Mustang have to pay a US$ 500 to get the permit, which is issued by the Department of Immigration (DoI). The permit is valid for 10 days.

With the rise in the number of trekkers, revenue collection via permit fee also increased in the review year. The government mobilized total revenue of Rs 185 million in permit fee from Upper Mustang. In the previous fiscal year, the government had collected Rs 156.7 million from permit fee.

Around 25,000 foreign tourists have visited the area since it was opened to foreigners in 1992.

Tourism Strategy getting its final touch

KATHMANDU, Nepal–The government is formulating Tourism Development Strategy for the overall development of the tourism sector. The strategy is being drafted and will be implemented in foreign countries through economic diplomacy, according Tourism Ministry.

The strategy to be unveiled soon will be implemented in two phases. First phase to be launched from 2014 to 2018 will be focused on diversification and improvement while the second phase will be launched from 2019 to 2023

Nepal has been officially open for international tourism since 1951 and the05 sector today is an important employer.

Latest tourism statistics has it that the number of youths who are in the 16-30 year age group are the ones visiting the country mainly for adventure tourism and the figure is increasing every year.

Government statistics state that in 2013 there was an increment of about 25 per cent in total tourist arrivals for adventure tourism that is trekking and mountaineering while in 2012 , 21.7 percent foreign tourists pay visit the country for trekking and mountaineering.

Adventure tourism now is not just trekking and mountaineering as tourists within the age group of 16-30 years are also being attracted to other adventure tourism products. Nepal has tremendous potential in adventure tourism, which has been identified as one of the fastest growing segments in global tourism.

In 2013, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, US,  Australia, Japan, Russia, India, Canada, Italy, and China were the top 10 countries from where Nepal received.
