National bird on verge of extinction


The national bird of Nepal Danphe (Lophophorus) is on the verge of extinction in Achham district. Lack of preservation and the conservation of Ramaroshan, the one and only place in the district that houses this national bird, have been attributed for it.

Casting light to the situation, Kali Bahadur Budha, a local said that unlike in the past, the villagers do not see the bird of this species in bulk.
“The concerned authority is not making any effort to conserve the bird as well its habitat, Ramaroshan,” he complained.
A local social worker Govinda Saud added that if the government continues to turn blind eye towards it, Ramaroshan will soon lose its existence apart from its habitats such as birds like Danphe and other wild animals.
People should work united at local level to address this issue, opined Chandra Prasad Dhungana, chairman of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), Achham.
Assistant District Forest Officer in Accham, Bhaktaraj Giri, stated that since it is the responsibility of the Department of National Park to conserve wild animals, the District Forest Office so far has not run any program as such.

The general assembly of International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) being held at Flagstaff, Arizona will focus on mountain environment, climbing and mountaineering ethics, access to nature, mountaineering expeditions, training standards.

The meeting will discuss on youth climbing and mountaineering mobilization, ice climbing development, UIAA safety standards, medical and anti-doping, along with other mountain related issues. The meeting is being organized A joint Nepali team of Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is taking part at the meeting to be held till October 18.

NMA President Ang Tshering Sherpa, First Vice President Santa Bir Lama, Central Executive Board Member Pemba Dorje Sherpa, and Secretary Suresh Man Shrestha and Under Secretary Ram Prasad Sapkota from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA), are jointly representing Nepal in the assembly.

Sherpa who is also an Honorary Member of UIAA will give a presentation focusing on mountain, cultural and other tourism products of Nepal.

NMA is also proposing the general assembly for an approval to hold UIAA General Assembly 2016 in Kathmandu.

During the meeting, representative from Tourism Ministry will give a presentation on the government’s plans and policies for the development of mountain tourism in Nepal.

The government of Nepal has decided to waive off climbing permit fee for mountain peaks in mid and far western regions for five more years effective from July 16. “It decided to extend royalty waiver after witnessing significant rise in trekking and mountaineering activities in mid and far western region over the past five years”, states the notification letter sent by Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation to Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). Earlier, the government had waived off climbing permit fee for mountain peaks in mid and far western region for five years starting July, 2008.

MakaluTrekking Agencies had been lobbying with MoCTCA for extension of royalty waiver arguing that trekking and mountaineering activities in mid and far western region was increasing gradually. Some unclimbed peaks of the region are:
