Popular Ghorepani-Poonhil trek route upgraded

Hotel and tourism entrepreneurs of Ghorepani have come together to upgrade the popular trekking route of Ghorepani-Poonhil.

In the past three years, more than Rs. 7 million has been spent in improving the condition of the trekking route, according to Ghorepani Hotel Management Committee. Last year, the committee had received Rs. 500,000 from the District Development Committee, and the remaining was contributed by the entrepreneurs.
The upgrading work was carried out in the 700 meters of Ghorepani-Poonhil route, 400 meters of Ghorepani-Shikha route and 200 meters of Ghorepani-Tikhedhunga route, said chairperson of the Committee Junu Pun. Work is still underway in the three kilometer Ghorepani-Ghandruk route.
The committee has been collecting funds including annual tax raised by the hotel, tourist tax and donations.

The Ghorepani region receives some 30,000 tourists every year. There are 22 well-equipped hotels in Ghorepani with an investment of more than Rs. 5 million. Ghorepani was opened to tourists in 1970. RSS

Nepal in Lonely Planet’s best travel destinations

Nepal has been included in the top list of the best places to travel this October by the world’s leading travel guide Lonely Planet.

“Everyone has seen the news reports from the April 25 earthquake in Nepal, but most reports neglected to mention that most of Nepal was untouched by the disaster, including the most popular trekking areas,” the travel guide said. “With the clearing of the monsoon rains, October is once again peak season for trekking, and the Annapurna region is a great, nay epic, place to start.”

From the gateway town of Pokhara, which saw little damage from the tremor, classic trekking routes such as the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Sanctuary Trek offers the kind of views normally reserved for mountaineers, it said.

Pokhara is easy to reach from Kathmandu, also fully open for business, and it’s easy to make arrangements for a trek on arrival. “In the process, you’ll be performing a valuable social service, helping Nepal to rebuild after the disaster by investing directly in the local economy.”

The Annapurna Circuit is the most popular trekking route in Nepal . It includes the high pass of Thorong-La. The trek reaches an altitude of 5,416 metres at Thorong-La, touching the edge of the fabled Tibetan plateau. The magnificent mountain scenery seen at close quarters includes Annapurna 8,091 metres, Dhaulagiri 8,167 metres and Machhapuchchhre 6,993 metres. Every year, more than 100,000 trekkers visit the Annapurna area, 50 percent of whom visit the circuit.

Other places recommended by the travel guide are Jordan’s Petra, Mexico, Britain, Italy and New Mexico for the world-renowned Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

With most of the countries lifting their negative travel advisories on Nepal, travel traders are optimistic that the country’s tourism will bounce back by autumn this year.

Recently, the US, UK and New Zealand lifted restrictions on their citizens travel ling to Nepal except to the districts hardest hit by the April 25 earthquake and aftershocks. A few countries have toned down their travel advisories.

The government, in a bid to revive the tourism industry, has been persuading countries to consider Nepal in regard to the travel alerts they have imposed after the earthquake.

The government has projected losing 40 percent of the tourists this year due to the mass departure of the visitors after the earthquake. Trip cancellations for the upcoming seasons are estimated to be more than 70 percent.

The Post-Disaster Needs Assessment report has pointed out that Nepal will significantly lose high-end tourists, but the low-end segment and backpackers will stick to their travel plans to visit the country.

Pokhara entrepreneurs assess Annapurna trails, declare them safe

Tourism entrepreneurs of Pokhara have assessed trekking trails in the Annapurna Region and declared them safe to visit.

Around 40 tourism entrepreneurs from Pokhara completed the popular Ghandruk-Ghorepani Trek this week as part of ‘Solidarity Walk to Annapurna for Tourism Revival’.
Ram Chandra Sharma, president of Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal Western Regional Association (TAAN-WRA), said the solidarity walk was organized to access the condition of trails after the devastating earthquake.

From the top of Poon Hill (3,210 meters), TAAN-WRA declared that trekking trails in Annapurna Region, all highways and airports, business complexes, and hotels, guest house and restaurants are safe. “We are prepared to welcome tourists to Nepal,” added Sharma.

Binaya Acharya, secretary of TAAN-WRA, said all teahouses, hotels and lodges in Annapurna Region have resumed operation.

Tourism entrepreneurs say they trekked in the Annapurna Region because they cannot assure safety of tourists by staying in their offices. “We organized this walk despite the monsoon, because we cannot assure trekkers that they are safe here without making assessment of the route. Foreigners trust us only we provide them factual information,” he said.

Though hotels in Ghandruk-Ghorepani area are almost empty, local hoteliers are hopeful of welcoming trekkers in autumn. Kisam Gurung, president of Tourism Management Committee, Ghandruk said that the visit and assessment of the area by tourism entrepreneurs is a strong proof that the area is safe. “Now, we can confidently say that the area is safe,” he added.

Similarly, Tika Ram Sapkota, media coordinator of PTRC, said the solidarity walk and the dissemination of message that the area is safe will definitely help to bring tourists in the area in autumn. We hope tourists will not cancel their bookings,” he added.

Beatrice Hearne from Indiana (US), who has booked a seven-day Nayapul-Ghorepani-Phedi trek for herself and her husband for autumn, said she was concerned because of lack of factual information. “Now that the area has been declared safe, we are really excited about the trip,” she told Republica in a Facebook chat.

Som Thapa, president of Pokhara Tourism Council, as all trails, bridges, tea houses, hotels and lodges are safe, tourism entrepreneurs can now invite their guests without worrying about anything. “Now we can assure tourists confidently that the area is safe,” he added.

The walk was organized jointly by TAAN-WRA in coordination with PTRC.

Tourists from 120 countries trekked Annapurna Circuit in 2014

Tourists from 120 countries enjoyed the Annapurna Circuit Trek in 2014.

Junu Pun, tourism assistant at Dharapani check post of Annapurna Conservation Area project (ACAP), said the popular trekking trail received visitors from 120 countries from across the world in 2014. Last year, the trail had received visitors from 86 countries. “The popularity of Annapurna Region is growing with each passing year. We are getting visitors from across the world,” she added.

Data compiled by ACAP shows a total of 20,694 foreign tourists enjoyed the Annapurna Circuit Trek in 2014. The trek begins from Besishahar of Lamjung and concludes in Jomsom after crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Last year, 21,207 tourists had completed the trek.

Tourism entrepreneurs say the popular trekking route is attracting visitors from across the world. “Not only the conventional markets, we have started receiving guests from new markets,” Ram Chandra Sharma, president of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) Western Regional Association, Pokhara, said.
Tourists from Sri Lanka, Syria, Pakistan, Mongolia, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Dominican Republic, Cambodia, Bolivia and Paraguay enjoyed the Annapurna Circuit trek in 2014.

“Word of mouth publicity is the biggest advertisement. It is good to note that tourists from new countries are coming here and promoting our products and services in their countries,” added Sharma.

France (2,702), Israel (2,687), Germany (2,042), United States (1,441), United Kingdom (1,317), Australia (1,095), Russia (859), Spain (849), Netherlands (812) and South Korea (691) were the top 10 countries in terms of number of visitors completing the Annapurna Circuit Trek in 2014, according to ACAP.

A study has been initiated to develop a circuit trek route encompassing Pokhara and villages in Tanahu and Syangja districts in a bid to boost rural tourism.

The survey will plot a route joining Pokhara, Chisapani, Chitre Bhanjyang, Kihu, Arudodaya, Siddha Cave and Bhimad. “The circuit has been developed with a motive to promote rural tourism,” said Aash Bahadur Gurung, general secretary of the Trek Management Committee.

The plan to develop a trek route was launched 14 years ago but no serious efforts have been made since. The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (Taan) have pledged to promote the initiative.

The trekking circuit will pass through 15 village development committees (VDCs) consisting of more than 30 villages in Tanahun and Syangja and two municipalities. The planned trekking circuit is 57 km long and rises from an elevation of 420 metres to 1,709 metres.

The trekking circuit aims to offer trekkers an experience of endangered cultures. The walk can be completed in 10 days. It will offer scenic views of mountains that cannot be seen from the cities. The route also features picturesque spots like Millennium Cave, Budha Kot, Deupuje Dhunga, Bhirkot Kalika, Manakamana Temple, Raipur and Kolma Kot. The Millennium Trek Festival has been organized for the past three years to promote the trekking circuit. “Our initiative has helped the increased the number of tourists,” said Harka Gurung, coordinator of the festival.

TAAN Lhosar Festival to be organized in Thamel

Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) has decided to celebrate TAAN Lhosar Festival in Thamel on February 17.

Speaking at a press meet organized at TAAN Secretariat in Maligaun, TAAN officials said preparations for the festival were at the final stage.

In the past years, TAAN used to celebrate Lhosar festival by organizing ‘Lhosar Dinner Ball’ in different hotels. This year it is organizing the festival in Thamel – the tourist hotspot in Kathmandu Valley — to promote Lhosar festival as a cultural tourism product.

TAAN President Ramesh Prasad Dhamala said the festival will see cultural performances of different ethnic groups like Gurungs, Tamangs and Sherpas.

The program will begin with a cultural procession from Sanchayakosh Building. The procession will pass through different thoroughfares in Thamel before culminating into a formal program at Tridevi Marg.

Traditional dances like Syabru (Sherpa), Maruni (Gurung) and Tamang (Selo) will be performed on the occasion. Ganesh Himal Tourism Development Committee will organize a special ‘Mhendo La’ Dance in Thamel. There will also be food stalls showcasing traditional cuisines of Sherpa, Gurung and Tamang communities, among others.

The program will also see various entertainment and fun-filled programs like live concert, modern dances and DJ session, among others. Renowned artistes like Performance by renowned artistes like Roj Moktan, DJ Tenzing, Mingma Sherpa, Resma Sunuwar, Himal Ghale, Abhinash Ghising, Nirmala Ghising, Sunil Lama, Jyoti Magar, Mausam Gurung, Sanjaya Gurung, Bhimu Gurung, AP Sherpa, Jayabir Tamang, Arambha Tamang, Bharat Sitaula, Dorji Lama, Suman Thapa Magar and DJ Biki are scheduled to perform at the program.

“By organizing the festival in Thamel, we want to press the authorities not to limit night activities in Thamel to say 10 pm. As a tourist hotspot, Thamel should operate round the clock,” TAAN General Secretary Sagar Pandey said.

Similarly, festival coordinator Kul Bahadur Gurung, who is also the second vice president of TAAN, said TAAN will give continuity to the festival based on response from the participants.

TAAN plans to organize the festival every year on February 17 to promote it as a cultural tourism product.
