A team of Nepal tourism entrepreneurs held an interaction with Indian tourism entrepreneurs and media-persons in Patna, the capital of India’s Bihar state today.

The team is there as part of a campaign to publicise Nepal’s tourist destinations and attract India tourists. The efforts are part of the campaign entitled ‘Chaliye Pokhara’ in Hindi language (Lets go to Pokhara in English) started six years ago by the Western Region Hotel Association, Pokhara in support of the Nepal Tourism Board.

The campaign that is held every year will conclude on July 4 for this year.

The interaction focused on making Nepal’s tourist destinations known to Indian community and attracting the locals, said one of the participants of the team. The team includes 30 members from among tourism entrepreneurs of Pokhara and Lumbini, officials of the NTB and media-persons.

Another interaction will be held in Lucknow later today, said the Association’s President Bikal Tulachan.

The campaign is aimed at reviving and strengthening tourism that was affected badly by the April 2015 earthquake, the India-imposed economic blockade and Tarai-Madhes protests.

Under the campaign, Indian tourists will be invited to visit Pokhara with an offer of a special package, said the Association’s General Secretary Ganesh Raj Pahari.

Tourism industry decides to execute Vision 2020

With the government’s ambitious Vision 2020 campaign to boost annual tourist arrivals to 2 million slowing down, the private sector has joined forces to give it a shot in the arm.

Travel trade associations like Hotel ASSOCIATION Nepal (HAN), Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents, Pacific Asia Travel Association, Nepal Association of Tour Operators and Nepal Mountaineering Association forged a pact on Wednesday to pursue the campaign jointly.

The group has also decided to conduct various national level events. A taskforce has been formed under the chairmanship of HAN General Secretary Binayak Shah to set the campaign in motion.

The government had launched Vision 2020 in 2012 with the view of increasing arrivals to 2 million by 2020. The effort has also set an ambitious target to increase EMPLOYMENT in tourism to 1 million. Vision 2020 follows Nepal Tourism Year 2011 that has been described as being a moderately successful campaign for being able to partly restore Nepal’s tourism image damaged by an insurgency that lasted from 1996-2006.

Subsequently, the government announced Visit Lumbini Year 2012, but the campaign failed to attain its goal which critics blamed on lack of adequate preparation. In 1998, the country had conducted a successful tourism campaign named Visit Nepal 1998. Nearly 800,000 tourists visited Nepal last year.

“The Vision 2020 campaign is an important event for Nepal’s tourism, but the government has been conducting the preparations at crawling speed,” said Shah. “In this scenario, we have decided that we need to make early preparations from our side,” he added.

At a time when the country’s tourism promotional body the Nepal Tourism Board has not been able to perform its duties efficiently, the government should be more serious about attaining the goal, Shah said. The tourism board has not been able to name a chief executive officer for the last three years.

A 16-member team of Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) recently explored a new trekking route in Badi Malika area in the far-western region.

Way to Badimalika, Bajura
The team, which was led by Tilak Thapa Magar — joint treasurer of TAAN, started exploration on August 4 and returned to Kathmandu on August 13.
Advance Monitor – a tourism monthly — was the local partner for the exploration.
The exploration trip began with a drive to Jadanga in Bajura and passed through Korda, Bodha Korda, Bhito Charne and Tribeni before reaching Badi Malika temple.
Team leader Magar said TAAN explored Badi Malika area to promote tourism in far-western region which is lagging behind despite having immense tourism potentials. “We chose Badi Malika because the area holds great tourism significance. We can connect this trip with Khaptad and develop a standard package of around two weeks,” he added. He also said TAAN will help to construct necessary infrastructures along the trail. “There is a need to widen the trail in some places. We also need to install signposts and develop camping sites,” Magar said, adding: “Likewise, locals need to be trained to start tea houses and community lodges.

Talking about attractions in the new route, Magar said Tribeni can be developed as a skiing site as the place is covered with snow in the winter. “From here, we can also build cable cat to the temple premises,” he added.
According to Kishor Khadka, editor of Advance Monitor, Badi Malika is a famous religious shrine in the far-western region. “The temple wears festive look during Janai Poornima and Ganga Dasahara festivals, drawing pilgrims from different parts of the country as well as from neighboring India,” he said, adding that even government agencies perform special pooja at the temple during the Janai Poornima festivals.
Khadka also said one can see grasslands, nomadic shepherds and terrace fields on the way. “Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking views of different mountain peaks like Api and Saipal from the Badi Malika temple premises,” he added
While returning, the trek passes through Dhabalpur Daha and Maurya. Vehicles to Kathmandu are available at Maurya.
TAAN is preparing promotional documentary, map and guidebook  to promote the new route.
