Lo-Manthang witnesses more tourists

Lo-Manthang witnesses more tourists

Lo-Manthang, a tourist spot in Mustang district, has witnessed an increase of 24 per cent in the influx of tourists this year.

Some 4,147 tourists have visited this place compared to 3,151 last year, according to Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), Mustang.

Mustang

Once believed to be the capital city of the forbidden kingdom, Mustang, Lo-Manthang is notable for its enchanting desert-like landscapes, remains of ancient caves, ancient monasteries and the Annapurna Trekking Route among others.

Bidur Kuikel, the Chief at ACAP, Mustang shared that the number of tourist wills likely surge in coming years since the tourists are found to return to the spot again.

The increment in the number of tourists to Lo Mangthan, situated at the altitude of 3,800 metres above sea level, could also be attributed to the recent construction of roads to the place, Kuikel opined.

Malaysia-based Malin-do Air is beginning scheduled-flights on Kuala Lumpur-Kathmandu sector from February 6. The airline has appointed Yeti Incentive Travels, a member of Yeti Group, as its general sales agent (GSA) in Nepal. According to Yeti Incentive Travels, Malindo Air will operate daily flights on Kuala Lumpur-Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur with a Boeing 737-900ER. It will offer 160 seats in economy class and 12 in business class.

Chandran Ramamurthy, CEO of Malindo Air, said though Malindo Air is a hybrid airline, it provides full service in business class and best service in economy class. “We will try to bring foreign tourists to Kathmandu,” said Ramamurthy. Saying that Malaysia has a huge number of middle-income earners who travel frequently, Ramamurthy said the airline hopes to bring more Malaysian tourists to Kathmandu.

Officials of Yeti Incentive Travels said introductory price for Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur flight will be fixed at around Rs 20,000. It, however, has not been finalized, they said. Norbu Tshiring Sherpa, managing director of Yeti Incentive Travels, said Malindo Air will provide the best service at affordable price. “We are confident that we will be able to stand out among our competitors within a few years,” he added.

Malindo Air is adding 100 aircraft in its fleet in the next 10 years. Initially, it will serve routes with flying distance of up to five hours from Kuala Lumpur. Ramamurthy said the airline plans to start services to Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and China within few years.

Ratish Chandra Lal Suman, director general of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), said international passengers have increased significantly in the last five years. “The launch of new airline will contribute further in the growth of international passengers,” he added. Malindo Air has received temporary operating permit (TOP) as two Malaysian carriers — Malaysia Air and Air Asia — are already operating 21 flights a week on Kuala Lumpur-Kathmandu sector. The existing Air Service Agreement (ASA) allows carriers of Nepal and Malaysia to operate a maximum of 21 flights each per week.

Suresh Acharya, joint secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, said Malaysia has proposed to Nepal to revise ASA. “We are studying their proposal. Nepal and Malaysia are likely to revise ASA in February,” added Acharya.

Nepal, India to jointly promote tourism

Nepal, India to jointly promote tourism

Nepal and India will soon begin joint tourism promotion campaign.

Speaking at the 51st anniversary of Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae said that there is a need of mutual cooperation as Nepal and India are jointly promoting tourism.

“As Nepal is a famous religious tourism destination for it has Pashupatinath, Lumbini, Muktinath and Janakpurdham. It should promote these destinations to attract tourists,” said Rae, adding, “Nepal should focus on religious and adventure tourism and it is through this it can bring in quality tourists”.

NATTA-AGM

Prachanda Man Shrestha, former CEO of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) said there is a need of the campaign to promote regional markets. “Nepal needs to move forward giving priority to neighboring countries India and China first to promote tourism and increase tourist arrivals,” said Shrestha.

At the program, NATTA demanded a certain percent from the tourism service fee (TSF) for strengthening the association. “As it the tour operators who bring in tourists, we should get certain percent from the TSF collected by NTB,” said DB Limbu, president of NATTA.

NATTA currently has around 500 members associated with it. It cancels the membership of companies that does not renew its membership for more than a year. Earlier, it used to cancel membership of companies that did not renew membership every six months.

The initiative to develop Pokhara as an international city has picked up momentum.

As many as ten formulas have been mooted by an all-party meeting to be coordinated by the regional office for the tourist city’s development. Similarly, as many committees have also been formed to conduct feasibility study.

Several coordinators have been nominated to carry out different works. The international conference centre will be coordinated by Sanjeev Bahadur Koirala while the view tower and Pokhara National Bus terminal will be looked after by Surya Bahadur Bhujel and Baburam Giri respectively.

Ganesh Bahadur Bhattarai has been selected as coordinator of Botanical garden. Himalaya Bakhrel, Ashok Palikhe, Tirth Shrestha, Bindu Kumar Thapa and Biswo Prakash Lamichhane have been nominated as coordinators for the zoo, art and literature park, Pokhara domestic bazaar and Pokhara ring road respectively. Coordinators have been authorised to add members to their committees as required.

The committees will submit the names of their team members within a deadline of three days and devise a work plan within one week.

Western regional administrator Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya said he will forward the work plan to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. “Once the work plan is approved by the OPMCM, work will begin,” Thapaliya added.

Thapaliya said the initiative had been taken to develop infrastructure in Pokhara to establish it as an international standard city. “Pokhara will lag behind if we do not take necessary measures now,” Thapaliya said.

Chairman of Pokhara Chapter of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Bindu Kumar Thapa pledged to lend all possible support for the new venture.

7 Travel Tips for Visiting Nepal

7 Travel Tips for Visiting Nepal

Nepal should top any outdoor traveler’s list of places to visit: its whitewater is unparalleled, there are hundreds of miles of single track, its home to the most famous mountains in the world, and the people are super friendly. If Kathmandu is the next place on your itinerary, check out these tips for making your trip go smoothly.

7-Travel-Tips-for-Visiting-Nepal

Staying Healthy
It’s unavoidable: you will get sick in Nepal. Everyone gets sick (even locals), but this shouldn’t deter you from visiting. An easy preventative measure is taking activated charcoal, which absorbs poison. I took two tablets a day, per the instructions on the bottle, and it seemed to work. I also used a lot of hand sanitizer, which is a great thing to carry in your pocket, especially because some bathrooms don’t have soap. When you do get sick, it’s nice to have antibiotics on hand, so ask your doctor to write a prescription before you leave the States.

Water Purification
Water is one of the most common vectors for illness in Nepal, but there are a number of ways to make sure your water is clean. Bottled water seems like the best option, but discarded bottles add to the country’s growing problem with pollution. Instead, carry a SteriPen or purification drops, like diluted bleach solution.

Paying
In Nepal, not all hands are created equal: your left is for use in the bathroom and your right is for everything else. This is especially important when you’re handling money, whether you’re paying or receiving change. If you want to be extra-polite, touch your left hand to your right elbow.

Eat-Local

Eating
Most people in Nepal eat with their right hand, rather than using a fork. When you eat at a restaurant, you’ll usually be offered a fork, but it speaks volumes if you use your hand instead. In addition to being more efficient, eating with your hand shows that you’re respectful of the tradition. I won’t lie, the first time I ate with my hand was a challenge, mostly because it’s so taboo in America. But once I got used to it, I never asked for a fork again.

Eat Local
This goes against the advice that most people will give because the easiest way to keep from getting sick is to eat at clean restaurants. But I think you miss out on a lot if you avoid local places. Nepal has a bustling tourist district (Thamel) where you can eat food from any country in the world, or where you can eat overpriced dal bhat (the local dish of rice and lentils). I usually ate lunch with my co-worker, who brought me to more than a few questionable-looking restaurants. But the food was always delicious and I never got food poisoning from our ventures. If you’re unsure where to go, ask where your guides like to eat out and give those places a try.

Street Kids
Kathmandu, and Thamel in particular, has a lot of children who beg for money on the street. It’s hard to walk past and ignore their begging, but it’s the best thing to do. Frequently, the kids are collecting money for an adult, which means they rarely see any of the money you give them. Instead, your gift makes the problem worse. If you want to make a difference, donate to a reputable INGO, such as Just One.

Be-Flexible

Be Flexible
this is good advice regardless where you’re traveling, but is especially useful to remember while in Nepal, where the weather reigns and things take longer than expected. I met a man who spent eight consecutive days in the airport, waiting for a flight to Lukla that just kept getting cancelled. Things never go as planned in Nepal, but that’s what makes it an adventure.
