The Yak is found primarily in south Central Asia, Mongolia, and Russia. At adult age, it stands at roughly 6 ft (2 m) tall, and can weigh up to 2,200 lb (1,000 kg). Its shaggy coat can be brown or black; although there are some gold-coated Himalayan yaks, this is exceedingly rare. Both sexes of this creature boast a pair of tall, sharp horns on their heads. The male’s horns can grow to lengths of up to 3.4 ft (1.04 m). The female’s horns are naturally somewhat shorter; these are used for digging under ice and snow. The yak’s diet consists mainly of lichens, mosses, and various other grasses. It has four stomachs to aid in digestion and cud-chewing, as well as keeping them warm.

Because of the habitat in which the yaks live, it can be difficult to find adequate vegetation to feed on; thus, the yak commonly has to travel very far due to the changing climate. In the temperate spring, the yak travels to lower ground for lush mosses and other vegetation. Soon after, as the summer gets unbearably hot, the yak must travel upthe mountains once again, seeking cooler temperatures.

Don’t be fooled; the Himalayan yak is no pushover. While extremely sensitive to high heat, they are exceptionally hardy in the cold, and can withstand temperatures as low as -40°F/C. This is due to a special fluid excreted in the yak’s sweat. This fluid matts their dense hair together tightly, giving the yak a very effective layer of extra insulation. In addition, this creature is an excellent mountain climber, though its bulkiness may make it seem otherwise; their split hooves give them extra footing on rocky terrain.

For centuries, yaks have been useful as domesticated animals, as well. More docile than its wild counterpart, the domesticated yak performs many essential daily tasks for humans, such as moving cargo. In Tibet, it is not uncommon to encounter yak’s milk ormeat for sale, and the wool makes very warm and comfortable clothing. Even its dried dung has its uses; as a fuel source for those living in the Tibetan plateaus.

Kathmandu City Ready for SAARC Conference

Kathmandu City Ready for SAARC Conference

The ongoing solar street lamp installation project in the Capital city is expected to be completed by the first week of November. To that end, the authorities concerned have been working round the clock putting up the lamp posts and installing the solar-powered lights. Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has been installing solar lights on major streets and thoroughfares of Kathmandu, with the target of accomplishing the project before the Saarc summit.

“We have been directed to complete the installation works on the assigned stretches three weeks before the summit. We are working day and night to meet the deadline,” said Bhanubhakta Bhattarai, chief at the NEA central branch. NEA has prepared a blueprint for first phase of the project. It is comprised of some major routes: Tribhuvan International Airport to Maitighar, Thapathali to Soaltee Mode, Maitighar to City Hall and Tundikhel to Ranipokhari

Similarly, the stretch from Tripureshwor to Jamal will also to be equipped with solar street lamps before the Saarc summit. “All these stretches are to be completed before the Saarc summit before we move on to the second phase of the project which will complete next year,” said Bhattarai.

The project is part of the Kathmandu city beautification plan concocted by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). While NEA has taken the responsibility of installing solar lamps on most of the major routes, KMC will only be overseeing the project being launched at Kesharmahal-Maharajgunj road. “It is because of the budget issues,” said Sanjay Raj Upadhyay, chief of the Road Department at KMC. “The government committed budget for the Saarc beautification is very tight.

Hence KMC will be supervising only one route.” The government has committed Rs 85 million to the KMC for city beautification project. A lion share of the budget will be spent on the solar light installation at Kesharmahal-Maharajgunj road.

Great news for those who seek to experience the thrill of free-falling from a great height as the adventurous sport of bungee jumping has finally begun in Pokhara.

The addition of bungee jumping has given another reason for tourists to visit the scenic city of Pokhara.

Bungy Jumping in Nepal

High Ground Adventure operates bungee jumping in Pokhara. With Golcha Organization and Mangal Group as main investors, a 45 meter high tower of bungee jumping has been installed atop a hill at Hemja.

“We firmly believe that bungee jumping will help attract both domestic and international tourists. The addition of this adventure sport in Pokhara will be a new tourist attraction,” said managing director of the project Abinav Churiwal.

Addressing the public before inauguration, Churiwal had said, “This sport will not only build a concrete foundation of adventure sports in Pokhara but will also help others to recognize the tourism potentials we have here.”

“Tower bungee has been installed for the first time in Nepal. This is certainly a thrill of a lifetime for those who do not fear heights,” said Churiwal. The first bungee jumping station was installed at a suspension bridge that connects locals to The Last Resort in Sindhupalchowk. “The sport is same but the thrill is different. I am sure this is a different experience and one should take a chance at least once,” said Churiwal.

According to Churiwal, the whole undertaking cost Rs 20 million. Bungee jumping operators charge foreigners more than the domestic visitors. They charge Rs 3,490 to domestic visitors and Rs 6,890 to foreigners. However, the cost for both Zip line and bungee jump is Rs 5490 for domestic visitors and Rs 9,990 to foreigners.
