The Himalayan Expedition, an organization promoting adventure sports in Nepal, is set to organize the 15th Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon in the Khumbu region on May 29. Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon is an international high altitude adventure sports event held from Mt. Everest Base Camp, criss-crossing the high Sherpa trails of Khumbu valley on May 29th every year.

This event celebrates the historical ascent on Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary on 29th May 1953. Event Manager, Shikhar Pandey said that the marathon will see a total of 200 runners from 31 countries, including Japan in the east and Peru in the west. “The marathon will feature three events – full marathon of 41.195 km, the ultra marathon of 60 km and the half marathon of 21 km,” Pandey said in Kathmandu. According to him, the full marathon will have open, women and foreigners categories. The top three finishers in the open category will be awarded NRs 200,000 (approx US$2,000), NRs 100,000 (approx US$1,000) and NRs 75,000 (approx US$750).

Likewise, the top three athletes in women category will get NRs 100,000 (approx US$1,000), NRs 75,000 (approx US$750) and NRs 50,000 (approx US$500) respectively. Similarly, the first, second and third finishers in foreigners section will get NRs 50,000 (approx US$500), NRs 35,000 (approx US$350), and NRs 25,000 (approx US$250) respectively. According to the organizers, the top three athletes in ultra marathon will get cash prize of NRs 100,000 (approx US$1,000), NRs 75,000 (approx US$750) and NRs 50,000 (approx US$500) respectively.

The half marathon winners will get NRs 50,000 (approx US$500), NRs 35,000 (approx US$350) and NRs 25,000 (approx US$250) respectively. The full marathon and ultra marathon will start from the Everest Base Camp at the altitude of 5,400m and end at Namche Bazaar, at the altitude of 3440m. Likewise, the Half Marathon will begin from Dingboche (altitude 4410m) and end at Namche Bazaar in Solukhumbu district in Nepal’s north-west. Rara Karnali Tourism Year is being observed from coming Baisakh 1st of the year 2075 in the lunar calendar. The tourism year is being observed in order to highlight the history, culture, civilization and natural beauty of Karnali with a target to bring in 500,000 tourists in the 12 months of the year, said publicity coordinator Dal Rawal at a press meet organised by the Karnali provincial government here today. The tourists arrival so far is 50,000 annually. Despite being the best tourism destination of Nepal, it has not yet become a major tourist attraction for lack of essential infrastructure and amenities, Rawal said while noting that efforts would be made to address those shortcomings. Karnali boasts of the Rara lake, Rara national park, Phoksundu lake, Bala Tripurasundari, Kakrebihar, Mansarovar and is the origin of Nepal’s 23 castes.

Also speaking at the programme, Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Tourism Board Dipak Raj Joshi assured for necessary support provided the locals help in tourism promotion of their locality. The travel website TripAdvisor has released its list of 25 best travel destinations in Asia, putting Kathmandu in sixth place. The list has given the top travel destination of Asia to Bali, Indonesia. The top five destinations besides Bali include Phuket, Thailand; Hanoi, Thailand; Siem Riep, Cambodia; and Tokyo, Japan. TripAdvisor is a top travel website used widely by travelers across the globe. Being placed in sixth place, Kathmandu can expect increase in tourist numbers. TripAdvisor is considered to be the go-to travel website around the world by travelers to choose travel destinations, hotels and restaurants, and as such, given high value in the tourism industry. Currently, the website has 315 million members. The top 25 destinations of Asia as released by TripAdvisor are:

The company imported a helicopter from French aircraft manufacturer Airbus, of the model S 350 B3 Series. The 300 million company intends to import another helicopter in the near future. The process to obtain AOC flight permission for the helicopter has already started, informed the Managing Director, Pratap Jung Pandey. The Lumbini Peace Marathon is going to be held on March 1 in Lumbini. Organizers claim that 250 people from indigenous and foreign background are participating in the competition. Players from Nepal, India, China, Australia, Korea, and Britain will participate in the competition. President of Lumbini Peace Marathon Mr. Vikram Pandey informed that the Lumbini Peace Marathon competition has been organized on Falgun Purnima because this is the day when Lord Gautam Buddha returned to his birthplace after getting enlightened. There are three categories including full marathon (42-198km), and half marathon of 21 km and 7 km. The winner of full marathon will be awarded a medal and 100 thousand cash prize and given an award named as ‘Lumbini Ashok Peace Puraskar’. Similarly, the first runner-up and second runner-up will be awarded with 45,000 and 70,000 respectively. The prize for the second place is named as ‘Kapilvastu Huyen San Puraskar’ and the third place prize is named as ‘Mayadevi Garden Ulthan Puraskar’. Similarly, the winner, first runner-up and second runner-up of half Marathon will be awarded with the cash prize of Rs 50 thousand, 35 thousand and 25 thousand respectively. The marathon will start from Kudan to Gotehawa, Kapilvastu,banganga, Tilaurakot, Niglihawa, Arorkot, Dohani and will finally end in Lumbini. CN Pandey Elected NATTA President CN Pandey elected NATTA president CN Pandey has been elected to the post of president of Nepal Association of Tour and Travels Agents (NATTA). At the election for the new executive committee held in Kathmandu on Friday, Pandey won by six votes. Pandey bagged 212 votes out of 420, while his rival Dipendra Kumar Sharma got only 206 votes. Similarly, Achyut Guragain and Sangita Jirel have been elected first vice president and second vice president, respectively, while Ramesh Thapa has been elected general secretary. NATTA president of CN Pandey Likewise, Sabita Bhattarai has been elected secretary, Ram Prashad Shrestha treasurer, and Surendra Bhattarai assistant treasurer. Shudarshan Nepal, Debaki Gurung, Phuri Gyaljen Sherpa, Amrit Kumar Dhakal, Ramesh Poudel, Raju Dhakal, Inu Thapa, Gita Dhakal have been elected members of the executive committee. The committee will have tenure of two years. NATTA is an umbrella organization of tour and travel agents that was established in 1966 in order to regulate the travel industry of the country.
