Tabei, first woman to scale Mt Everest, no more

Junko Tabei, first woman to scale Mount Everest, has died at the age of 77.

Tabei was suffering from cancer for the past four years and died in the course of treatment at a cancer centre in a Japanese town of Saita, according Japanese Mountaineering Association.

Born in Japan on September 22, 1939, Tabei reached atop the Everest in 1975, becoming the first woman to ascent the highest peak in the world.

Breaking the sad news about Tabeis death, President of the Nepal Mountaineering Association Ang Tshering Sherpa said the Japanese Mountaineering Association and Alpine Club confirmed the death of Tabei, saying she died three days ago.

He compared the death of Tabei as a huge loss to the mountaineering tourism sector of Nepal for Sherpa argued that Tabei adored the land housing Mount Everest.

Tabei has done many good works in the sector of mountaineering tourism. She has also contributed to advancing the cause of environmental conservation and played important role in the promotion of mountaineering tourism sector, admitted President Sherpa. With her demise, Nepal lost a good friend, he added.

Tabeis last visit to Nepal marked on April 30 this year when she led a Japanese mountaineering team to observe the golden jubilee of the first ascend of Mount Manaslu and Mount Lhotse.

Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of the Peoples Republic of China have signed a 16-point memorandum of understanding along with a commitment of collaboration for bilateral tourism.

The agreement was reached at the end of the 9th meeting of the Joint Tourism Coordination Committee between Tibet and Nepal that concluded here on June 28.

In the four-day meeting, both sides reviewed the progress achieved on the understandings made in previous meetings, and emphasized for further cooperation in implementing them while resolving the issues, if any, through mutual cooperation. The two sides also underscored the need of further promoting tourism cooperation by seizing opportunities available in both sides.

As part of the understanding, both sides have agreed to expedite the construction of Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border point and to open it up for tourist mobility gradually after the conditions meet required standard. Likewise, it was agreed to develop trans-boundary tourism co-operation between Humla District of Nepal and Pulan County (TAR of China) with regards to the Mt Kailash Sacred Landscape Programme (KSLP).

On resuming Kathmandu-Lhasa-Kathmandu direct bus services, both sides agreed to resolve issues such as carrier company, stopping and starting stations, safety, selling tickets, etc, so as to promote Nepal-China direct bus service. The Consulate General of Nepal in Lhasa will coordinate with China side in this regard.

After agreeing to initiate dialogue to make uniform rules and regulations regarding age limit, disabilities etc in climbing border mountains, both sides agreed on helicopter rescue and evacuations in emergencies during mountaineering and trekking periods after securing required approval of the related authorities of their respective governments.

The Chinese side agreed to assist in promoting Nepal tourism among Chinese people through Chinese Tourism Authority. It also agreed that processing multiple entry visa and permit for mountaineers and support staff and issuing visa for pilgrims from Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu will be reported to the higher authorities in China.

Both sides agreed to explore the possibilities of increasing frequency of scheduled flights in Kathmandu-Lhasa-Kathmandu sector with reasonable fair, and to enhance cooperation among their travel-trade associations through their tourism authorities.

The two sides also agreed to report the unresolved issues to their higher authorities and make further coordination through the diplomatic channels.

The Nepali delegation to the JTCC was led by Director General at the Department of Tourism Sudarshan Prasad Dhakal and the Chinese delegation from Tibet was led by Vice Director General of the Tibet Tourism Development Committee Ga Ma Ze Deng.

The 10th meeting of the Joint Tourism Coordination Committee will be held in TAR of China in 2017.

NTB announces 2073 as Ghumphir Barsa

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) on Monday announced Bikram Sambat 2073 as Ghumphir Barsa, which means travel year, in a bid to promote domestic tourism. The initiative is part of the governments preparations to organize International Tourism Year 2017-18.

A minister-level decision had approved the proclamation of Ghumphir Barsa last Friday.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will make a special announcement of the programme, the first of its kind, on April 24 to commemorate the first anniversary of the April 25 earthquake.

As our domestic tourism requires promotion, we have decided to conduct a wide promotional campaign to encourage domestic sightseers to travel in Nepal, said Deepak Raj Joshi, CEO of the NTB. The programme is part of the preparations to declare 2017-18 as International Tourism Year.

The NTB has allocated a budget of Rs2 million to carry out promotional activities to make the programme a success.

The board will encourage the private sector to create special packages targeting Nepali travellers. NTB will help the private sector to promote the tour packages, said Joshi.

Likewise, the tourism promotional body has suggested to the government to allocate a separate budget for travel leave concessions for government employees in the next fiscal year. Besides, the NTB has also planned to encourage the corporate sector to provide travel leave holidays.

As per the plan, a booklet will be published describing the tour packages developed by travel and tour operators, the board said. In a bid to promote new destinations, travellers will be offered schemes and incentives, said Joshi.

There are no statistics regarding domestic tourism in Nepal, but travel trade entrepreneurs said that the trend was on the rise owing to young travellers and adventure lovers who are exploring new ways of recreation.

They said that places like Pokhara, Chitwan, Muktinath and the Annapurna Circuit, among others, have been receiving a large number of domestic visitors due to a growing middle class.

Nepal’s tourism sector is providing 3.5 percent of the total employment in the country, directly providing 487,000 jobs in 2014, according to a research report published by World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and research partner Oxford Economics.The report, however, shows that direct job from travel trade sector is decreasing. In 2012, tourism sector had employed 553,500 people. It went down to 504,000 in 2013. However, WTTC expects that number of jobs to increase by 4 percent to 507,000 in 2015.

The report has included jobs provided by hotels and restaurants, travel agents, airlines, passenger transportation services and leisure industries.

Bhola Bickram Thapa, managing director of President Group of Companies, said that employment from tourism sector declines with the drop in tourist arrivals. “People working the tourism sector are attracted toward overseas jobs. This has also resulted to decline in number of jobs in the tourism sector,” said Thapa.

Nepal is ranked 33rd among 184 countries in terms of absolute employment creation.

It is estimated that more than 800,000 tourists visited Nepal in 2014 and the country mobilized *Rs 53.7 billion in revenue from the tourism sector. The revenue is estimated to grow by 1.1 percent to Rs 54.3 billion in 2015. Number of tourists is also expected to climb to 997,000 this year.

According to the report, the tourism industry attracted investments worth Rs 15.7 billion in 2014. It expects investment to increase by 12 percent in 2015. The sector contributed Rs 171.6 billion, or 8.9 percent, to Gross Domestic Product in 2014. The report expect tourism sector’s contribution to GDP to grow by 5.8 percent to Rs 181.6 billion, or 9 percent, in 2015.

Nepal is ranked 122nd in terms of total contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Likewise, direct contribution of tourism to GDP, mainly from jobs in 2014 was, Rs 83.7 billion, or 4.3 percent of GDP. The report forecast this to rise by 5.4 percent to Rs 88.2 billion this year.

Leisure travel spending, both inbound and domestic, generated Rs 111.9 billion, which is 85.5 percent of travel and tourism GDP, compared to Rs 19.1 billion, which is 14.5 percent of total GDP from business travels.

The report has forecast leisure travel spending to grow by 4.7 percent in 2015 to Rs 117.1 billion and business travel spending to grow by 10 percent to Rs 21 billion.

According to the report, domestic travel spending generated 59 percent of direct travel and tourism GDP in 2014 compared to 41 percent of GDP by the international tourists. Domestic travel spending which was Rs 77.3 billion in 2014 is expected to grow by 8.5 percent in 2015 to Rs 83.8 billion this year.

The MOU was made and entered between NATTA and Sajha Yatayat, a public Transport Cooperative for outsourcing buses for SajhaYatayat’s Nepal India Bus Service. Both the parties have mutual concord to start Nepal-India bus service in the banner of Sajha Yatayat using the quality buses of tour and travel companies who are the members of NATTA.

Mr. Sher Bahadur Budha, CEO of Sajha Yatayat and NATTA Acting President / 2nd Vice President Mr. C.N Pandey signed the agreement.

NATTA Executive Member, Mr. Sudhir Kumar Upadhyay has been appointed the Coordinator for this project.
